If you’re on a mission to shed some pounds but wary of products advertised as “weight loss supplements” we get it. In decades past, weight loss pills were a dangerous fad. Key ingredients in some of the most infamous supplements, such as ephedra, are now banned in the United States.

However, weight loss supplements are now boasting many natural ingredients. Whether you’re looking for something to help you power through a weight loss plateau or trying to stop the effect of yo-yo dieting for good, ask your doctor if these seven supplements may be right for you.

1. African Mango

African mango is an ingredient in many natural weight loss supplements. It can also be purchased in capsule form. The U.S. National Institute of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements states that the extract shows promise in promoting weight loss. One randomized study revealed that individuals who consumed 150mg of the supplement 30-60 minutes before meals showed more significant weight loss over ten weeks than those who took a placebo.

Warning: African Mango supplements may cause renal failure in those with chronic kidney disease.

2. Coriander

Studies have shown that coriander seeds and extract may be an excellent weight loss supplement. In trials, it has been shown to lower cholesterol, fewer free fatty acids, and may even boost the immune system. Additionally, coriander has a diuretic effect, meaning that it may help you lose water weight and reduce bloating.

3. Cocoa Powder

Cocoa is a popular supplement that is shown to aid weight loss. The powder is frequently mixed into healthy shakes and is also available in pure capsule form. Not only does cocoa help with weight management, but it’s packed with antioxidants, enhances cognitive function, and improves mood. It may boost your immune system and help reduce inflammation.

4. Peppermint Oil

Peppermint itself doesn’t promote fat loss, but it can boost your energy and soothe sore muscles. The benefits of these properties mean that you can hit the gym harder and recover more quickly. It can help curb food cravings, and one study showed that individuals who drank water mixed with peppermint oil demonstrated better athletic performance than those who did not over ten days.

5. Sweet Orange Oil

Recent studies show that sweet orange oil may help prevent weight gain and lower cholesterol. It’s also been shown to improve healthy bacteria in the gut microbiome and reduce inflammation. It is currently being studied as a possible dietary supplement to fight obesity.

6. Carnitine

Carnitine is another popular ingredient in weight loss supplements that are said to increase fatty acid oxidation. The United States Department of Health and Human Services reports that there are no safety concerns for individuals who consume less than 2 grams of carnitine a day.

Warning: Carnitine may increase TMAO levels when taken in high doses. TMAO is a biological compound that is processed in the liver. It is linked to the build-up of plaque in blood vessels, heart attacks, blood clots, and hypertension.

7. Green Coffee Bean Extract

Green coffee bean extract has been all the hype in recent years, included in many weight loss supplements and available on its own in capsule form. It’s said that the extract may have a positive effect on weight loss, as it helps regulate glucose metabolism and may reduce fat retention.

The Bottom Line on Weight Loss Supplements

The FDA does not regulate dietary supplements in the same way it does food or medication. Manufacturers may begin selling supplements without the FDA seal of approval. The FDA is not authorized to regulate such supplements before they hit the market. Once the FDA does review a supplement, they only determine whether or not it’s safe, not if it’s effective.

It may be challenging to confirm that the listed ingredients, and their noted doses, are included in a supplement that is not FDA approved. Furthermore, many supplements have adverse effects and may be dangerous for pregnant women or those with certain health conditions.

Furthermore, it is often difficult to prove a single ingredient’s success rate, as most weight loss supplements contain a long list of ingredients. It is advised that you speak with your doctor before taking any dietary supplements.
