It’s estimated that millions of tons of plastic could be making their way into the ocean each year. It wreaks havoc on our ecosystem and kills sea creatures that the world depends on to continue the circle of life. For the marine life that plastic doesn’t kill, it can still bring great pain and suffering, as the element often ends up in the stomachs of ocean dwellers when they mistake it for food.
A sea full of plastic is damaging the entire planet, so how can we help?
Marine Life is Suffering
It’s been reported that a baby turtle was recently found with 104 pieces of plastic in its stomach. Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident. A whale was reportedly found with more than 88lbs of ingested plastic. Even sea animals in the deepest trench in the entire sea, Challenger Deep, were found to have microplastics in their systems. Add this to the plastic fishing nets, bags, and other items that animals and fish get caught in, and the scope of harm caused by plastic is too great to ignore.
Why This Matters
The delicate balance of the ocean and all of its organisms is crucial to the well-being of our planet. Marine life helps protect the coral reef, provides nutrients that other animals need to survive, prevents the overgrowth of toxic algae, and helps clean the H2O that ultimately sustains every fiber of our lives.
How Can We Help?
Protecting the ocean and the life that inhabits it is crucial. With so much plastic in the sea, it may seem like one person can’t possibly make a difference. This isn’t true. What starts with just one person can quickly turn into a movement to save the seas. As the saying goes, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
