Staying at home with the kids for an extended period of time has its challenges. What began as a great time to connect with your kids and their day-to-day can end with everyone in tears and you feeling like a failure. Whether you know you are home with the kids temporarily or for the long-haul, things can get stressful. It’s easy to feel burned out and frustrated.

You’ve set up a routine, made a schedule, created a work space, and have your list of activities to keep the kids occupied. And you still may end up at your wits end. Don’t worry, GR8 parents, we know it’s tough out there. No matter how prepared you are, something is likely to disrupt your carefully, well-thought out routine and schedule. Just know that things will work out in the end. Until then, these affirmations can help you get back to calm.

1 of

I Am the Calm in the Chaos

When the house looks like a tornado hit it, the phone won’t stop ringing, the kids are fighting over whose turn it is, and the dog has gone on the rug, there is only one thing in your control—yourself. It’s not easy to be the calm in this storm, but remind yourself that if you stay calm, you can handle everything else.

2 of

This Too Shall Pass

My mother said this often, and I’m sure yours did also. Now I know why. It’s hard to deal with so much all at once, but if you remind yourself that almost all situations are temporary, you can get on with handling the one in front of you. Challenges and frustrations that seem monumental in the moment, often seem less significant when you look back on them. Sometimes things don’t pass as quickly as you’d like, but they do pass. And you survive them.

3 of

It’s Okay to Ask for Help

On those days when you manage to make the kids cry, and no schoolwork or housework is getting done, remember it is okay to ask for help. Before you know it, the teacher will be helping one child on a Zoom, and the other will have settled in to do their homework. And, your partner will be unloading the dishwasher. All good in the neighborhood.

4 of

Good Moms Have Bad Days, Too

Just because you are a parent doesn’t mean you are suddenly blessed with infinite patience and all the answers. If only. Having a bad day doesn’t mean you are a bad parent. We all have bad days, and that’s okay. So, get out there, GR8 parents, you can do this.

5 of

My Children Don’t Want Perfect, They Want Me

My family motto has always been “If you can do, you can overdo,” so I know how easy it is to get caught up in the perfect mom trap. Keep in mind that your child doesn’t want perfect, they want you. They want your hugs and kisses, they want your love, they want to know how special you think they are.

6 of

It’s Okay to Take Care of Me

Caregivers need self care, too. In order to be the best parent you can be, you need to take care of yourself, first. When the flight attendant gives out the oxygen mask instructions, they say put your mask on first. That’s because you need the oxygen to be able to help your child get their mask on. The same goes for parenting. While you may let your self care slide on occasion, don’t make a regular habit of it. Even five minutes of daily self care can help you be a better parent.

7 of

I Am Persistent and Energetic

Okay, so maybe you feel tired and you want to give up. But, we know that’s not you. Everyone needs rest and everyone gets frustrated. This affirmation reminds us that we are both persistent and energetic. That we do get things done. We just need a nap first.
