There’s no starting point for yoga, although many people trace it back at least five thousand years. The closest thing to a founding moment is a 2,000-year-old guidebook that talks about how to master the mind by growing spiritually and controlling our emotions. These guidelines are still part of the framework for all modern yoga styles.
Yoga is known for its postures and poses, but they weren’t part of the original yoga practice. Fitness wasn’t the primary goal of yoga. Initially, it was all about expanding spiritual energy using breathing methods and using breathing techniques to promote mental focus.
No matter your background, yoga is a mind-body practice with tremendous power. It takes practice and patience to understand how yoga can impact our wellbeing and mental health. But, with time, most people start noticing better moods, self-awareness, a positive mindset, and overall balance.
The practice of yoga for physical and mental purposes consists of asanas or yoga postures that connect through sequences known as vinyasa. Most practices include breathing exercises, ending with a relaxation practice, or meditation session. There are many yoga practice styles, but they are all part of the same concept.
Many yoga instructors talk about your yoga practice as very personal. It genuinely is. Every time you step on the yoga mat, you let yourself be vulnerable. In your yoga practice, there’s no ego. The practice isn’t about hitting every yoga pose. The idea is to focus on your mindfulness, your self-awareness, and your breathing. Mastering the poses will come in time, but first you have to master your mindset. Every time you step on the mat, you’re doing something for yourself, you’re working on your spirit, you’re celebrating your soul.
