Do you crave carbs like crazy and then feel terrible after eating them? Not like, had too many servings of bread at brunch terrible, but more like fatigue that has you feeling drained and dizzy? If you’ve ever heard the term “carb intolerance” buzzing, you’ve probably wondered what the deal is.

Can a person experience intolerance to carbohydrates? You may be wondering if you are one of these people.

Can I Carb or No?

Well, the verdict is that yes, you can have an intolerance to carbs. A variety of environmental and genetic factors can contribute to the possibility of having an intolerance. The symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal bloating and discomfort, and flatulence.

If you’re looking for a quick inference based on the standard criteria—pop into our quiz for more of an insight into whether or not you could have an intolerance to carbs.

How to Find Out

A hydrogen breath test is required for clinical diagnosis. Treatment for the condition involves, yes, the horror, limiting and eliminating carbs. The symptoms vary for adults and children but are generally consistent with digestive complications.

The Importance of Checking

Make sure to speak with a physician if you suspect that you or your child may have an intolerance to carbs. Identification can be tricky as other conditions such as irritable bowel disease are similar, as well as the capacity for carbs to affect any given individual.

Some people may experience adverse symptoms with certain forms of carbs and not others. Remember to seek a medical opinion to verify the presence of any food intolerance you may be struggling with. Avoid auto-diagnosis. This can lead to potentially dangerous situations. If you believe you may be intolerant to carbs or any other food, consult with your doctor to take a test.
