How often do you deep clean your jewelry? While we wash our clothes after wearing them, most of us don’t think about cleaning our jewelry. I don’t want to gross you out, but jewelry can collect dirt and even dead skin cells.

I know what you’re thinking: one more thing to remember to do, one more errand to put on my to-do list. Well, I have GR8 news. You don’t have to take your jewelry out to have it professionally cleaned, nor do you have to spend tons of time doing it yourself.

Everything You Need Is Probably in Your Cupboard

You probably have everything you need to get and keep your jewelry sparkling right in your kitchen cupboard. If you’ve read our genius baking soda hacks, you probably know you can clean your silver jewelry with baking soda.

However, there are so many more products you already have that can be used to clean your jewelry. Please note that these methods are not recommended for use on pearl jewelry.

Ketchup: let tarnished jewelry sit in a bowl of ketchup for 5-10 minutes. Remove and gently scrub with an old toothbrush. Rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cloth.

Vinegar & Baking Soda: soak jewelry in a mixture of two tablespoons baking soda and 1/2 cup vinegar for a couple of hours. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

Salt & Aluminum Foil: dissolve a tablespoon of salt into two cups of hot water. Add a few strips of aluminum and silver jewelry. Soak for a few minutes and stir occasionally. Rinse and dry.

Window Cleaner: spray your metal and hard gemstone jewelry with window cleaner and use an old toothbrush to scrub off grime. Wipe with a soft cloth.

Seltzer Water: give your precious and semi-precious gemstones a bubble bath by soaking them overnight in a glass of seltzer water. Wipe dry and enjoy their sparkle.

Toothpaste: the ultimate, all-purpose jewelry cleaner, toothpaste can be used to clean all types of jewelry except softer stones and pearls. Use an old toothbrush and a dab of toothpaste. Dampen a cloth with warm water and wipe off the paste.
