Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed the buzz around self care. At GR8NESS, we celebrate the rise in popularity and the importance we’re all placing on self care. Are you sure you’re practicing conscious self care? Can you be 100% sure your self care routines are not just floating on the superficial level?
None of us are strangers to popping on the TV for some easy-viewing that helps us relax and unwind — grabbing that chocolate bar in the middle of the night to satisfy your craving. Taking a never-ending shower after a long day at work.
There’s nothing wrong with those practices. But, how often are we performing these activities in the name of self care?
If you stop for a second and examine your patterns, can you say you were relaxed while watching TV? Did eating that chocolate bar makes you feel better or guilty afterward? Was that shower a relaxing effort, or were you overthinking your workload during it?
See? Perhaps you’ve not been paying much attention to your self care practices after all.
What’s Conscious Self Care?
Let’s start by defining consciousness: the act of being present at the moment, fully aware of the impact of your actions and mindset.
In essence, conscious self care is all about learning, reflecting, and maintaining your routine so that you can thrive. The idea is not to let your mind wander off during a meditation session. Instead, you should be making a conscious effort to realize how, why, where, and what you are doing for yourself.
Once you master the art of practicing conscious self care, you’ll understand the difference and tap into a deeper level of caring. Suddenly, you’ll realize sometimes your routines felt more like work than actual self care.
