Diabetes affects approximately 30 million people in the United States, and around 7.2 million have not been diagnosed. Despite being a disease that can be managed, it has claimed countless lives. Diabetes was responsible for 1.6 million deaths in 2016, and since has continued to affect the health of many.

Part of the treatment for diabetes includes lifestyle changes pertaining to diet. Consuming superfoods are hearty support for treating diabetes. Take a look at these superfoods that might just save the day.

Leafy Greens 

Leafy greens like spinach, cabbage, and kale are all beneficial for those with diabetes. These greens pack a fibrous punch, along with antioxidants, vitamins, and other components that help to balance blood sugar.

Chia Seeds

A study published by the British Journal of Nutrition demonstrated that chia seeds blocked the development of dyslipidemia and insulin resistance in entirety. Even animals whose diet consisted of 65% sugar saw a decline in blood sugar levels. In the same study, chia seeds enabled the full recovery of rats with diabetic conditions. 

Risk: If you are taking blood thinners, consult with a physician before adding chia seeds as they are a natural blood thinner themselves.

Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is the leanest and less fatty of yogurt varieties, and clinical studies suggest that lactic acid bacteria are beneficial for glycemic control. Greek yogurt can also help to manage hunger, alter gut hormone response, and regulate metabolism, which all help to fight diabetes.
