The most common use of Epsom salts is for treating body aches and it’s very effective for this purpose, especially amongst athletes and people who work out often. But, there are many other handy uses for Epsom salts that you might not be aware of.

Aiding Constipation

Epsom salts act as a natural laxative which is really pretty awesome. If you are suffering from constipation and have some of the stuff on hand, it's easy to use, simply mix a teaspoon of Epsom salts with a glass of water and drink it down. It’s the magnesium that should work to get everything moving again.

Plant Fertilizer

If you’re an avid gardener, don't bother buying expensive fertilizers when Epsom salts can do the job just as well. Add one teaspoon straight into the soil of any plant (particularly vegetables) and watch them grow to be much more impressive.

Clean Your Washing Machine

A build-up of grime will gather in your washing machine over time and for that, some Epsom salts should do the trick. Fill up your washing machine with hot water before adding some of the salts and set the machine to a regular cycle. Once done, it will be like you've got a brand- new machine.

Removing a Splinter

Most people remove splinters with tweezers but it's pretty painful and there are much better methods out there including using Epsom salts. If you apply Epsom salts to the skin where the splinter is, it will help draw it to the surface like magic.

Relieve Sunburn

While there are many effective "after sun" options on the market, Epsom salts act as a more affordable alternative. You can make your own by just adding two tablespoons of the salt in a spray bottle with one cup of water. Use when necessary after you’ve been overindulging in UV rays.

Cold and Flu Relief

Just like you would use Epsom salts in your bath to relieve sore muscles, you can use the exact same method for helping relieve cold and flu. This can actually strengthen your immune system, increasing white blood cells and fighting off any infections even before they have begun. While this is not a confirmed remedy, it certainly can't hurt.

Grout Cleaner

The grout between the bathroom and kitchen tiles can get very dirty because this is an area that’s hard to reach during typical cleaning jobs. This is where Epsom salts come in, acting as an effective cleaner for grout. Mix equal parts of the salts with dishwashing detergent before applying the mixture to the grout on the tiles. Give it a few minutes to soak in before scrubbing away for instant results.

NIH recommended dose for Epsom salt as a laxative is 2-6 teaspoons (dissolved in water) daily. There is a big difference between 2 and 6 teaspoons, please use caution when self-dosing and consult your physician to ensure you don’t have any underlying gastrointestinal issues prior to using Epsom salts. The only way Epsom salts would be beneficial to your plants is if your soil is deficient in magnesium or sulfate. Skip the Epsom salt and use high quality potting soil and commercially available fertilizer to ensure your plants are not deficient in key nutrients. Magnesium sulfate is not a common ingredient in washing machine and grout cleaners. Sodium carbonate is an ingredient in nearly all of these products. Sodium carbonate is a precursor to sodium biocarbonate, ie baking soda. Use baking soda as a washing machine or grout cleaner instead of Epsom salt. There’s no scientific evidence that indicates magnesium is absorbed through the skin. When removing a deep splinter, soaking the area in warm water will soften the skin and make it easier to remove, Epson salt won’t help or hinder this process. Since magnesium isn’t absorbed through the skin, I would caution against using Epsom salt on a sunburn. Instead, drink water to stay hydrated and use moisturizer or aloe vera to reduce dryness and soothe the skin. Finally, Epsom salt is not a scientifically backed treatment for cold and flu. If magnesium isn’t absorbed through the skin, how does bathing in Epsom salt increase white blood cells or relieve cold/flu? Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.
