Food Allergies Around the World [Slideshow]

About 220 to 520 million people around the world live with food intolerances, according to the World Allergy Organization. While the verdict is still out as to why so many of us are sensitive to certain foods, we cannot ignore their existence. Recent research suggests a type of cell could be the culprit of our food allergies. However, more research is still needed to determine which allergies are triggered by environmental factors and which ones are genetics.

What’s true is that no matter where you go around the world, you’ll find people struggling with food allergies. Let’s explore the world through a food intolerance lens.

In The US

The US is home to an estimated 26 million people or around 19 percent of U.S. adults suffering from some kind of food sensitivity. The most common allergies include:

  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Tree nuts
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Sesame

According to research, one in thirteen Canadians has a serious food allergy. Around 2.5 million Canadians suffer from food allergies, that’s about 7.5% of the population. Most common allergies in this region include:

The prevalence of food hypersensitivity in Mexico is around 2.7%, with almost 51% of patients being under five years old. The most frequent allergies include:
