Here are some nightmares every makeup lover knows too well: your favorite mascara just dried, your go-to powder has a greasy film on top, and your makeup brushes make you cringe. There’s nothing worse than realizing your favorite beauty product is almost gone.
First, you must know all about makeup expiration dates to stay safe. Then, you need to learn all about how extending the life of your beauty products will make your life more convenient and save you some money in the long run.
1. Mix Foundation and Toner
Foundation is one of the most expensive beauty products we have, not to mention the one we use the most. If you want to extend the life of your go-to foundation, but you don’t want to mix it with moisturizer, try adding a few drops of alcohol-free toner.
2. Clean Your Brushes and Sponges
Good quality makeup brushes can last forever – if you keep them clean. Make sure you’re cleaning your makeup brushes the right way, the same goes for any sponge applicators you may use. For both, you should try to keep them clean after every use. Or at least, get in the habit of doing it once a week.
3. Revive Powder with Tape
Powder makeup tends to develop a hard film on top. This is often due to oil build up. The problem with this film is that it’s filled with bacteria and other gunk that we bring from our skin every time we use it. To get rid of this, use a bit of tape, press it against the powder, and see the film coming off once you take off the tape.
4. Soak Mascara in Hot Water
Mascara is one of the most tossed beauty products ever. While the shelf-life of mascara is also very short, our misuse of this product makes it dry rather quickly. If your mascara feels dry after a few weeks of use, soak it in hot water to help loosen the pigment. Additionally, make sure you don’t pump the mascara brush every time you use it, to prevent air bubbles forming inside the tube.
5. Add Oil to Eyeliners
When your favorite eyeliner goes dry, it almost seems like the world is ending. Get out of this nightmare with a little help from a high-quality oil. Use a small drop of a face oil such as jojoba oil to the tip and create the perfect cat-eye look. A bit of Vaseline or a drop of saline solution will also do the trick.
6. Add a Drop of Alcohol to Your Eyeshadow
Finally, let’s bring those eyeshadows back to life. We all have that extensive eyeshadow palette. We only use a shade or two. But, occasionally, we decide it’s time to be bold and adventurous, only to find out they’re all dry. Well, add a small drop of rubbing alcohol to your favorite eyeshadow or your brush to bring the pigments back to life.
