If you’d love to be able to strengthen your relationships with your parents as an adult, keep reading.

Talk to Them on a Regular Basis

Ideally, you should aim to call your parents at least once a week. Even if you lead a busy, hectic lifestyle, you should be able to make the effort to chat to your parents for 15 minutes a week. While it’s a great idea to text your parents, in order to keep in touch, don’t underestimate the impact that a short phone call can have on your relationship with your parents. You’ll find that your parents will perk up as a result of hearing your voice and getting to share a few laughs with you on the phone.

Weekly Visit

If you live close to your parents, you may want to arrange a regular weekly meetup. As an example, you may want to visit your parents on Sundays to share a meal together.

Continue to Make New Memories

One way to maintain a healthy, supportive relationship with your parents is to make an effort to make new memories with your parents. As sharing new, memorable experiences with your parents can help strengthen your relationship. As an example, you may be interested in booking a vacation to a new destination with your parents each year. Through sharing exciting experiences with your parents, you’ll continue to learn new bits of information about your parents. Better yet, you’ll get to make fun memories which you’ll be able to talk about as a family, for the rest of your lives.

Avoid Scrounging Off Your Parents

In order to be able to relate to your parents as fellow adults, it’s a wise idea to avoid scrounging off your parents. While it’s perfectly okay to accept occasional gifts from your parents, you shouldn’t rely on your parents to pay for your everyday living expenses. As you don’t want to rely on your parents for money and you don’t want your parents to see you as a dependent child.

Contact Your Parents Even When You Don’t Want Anything from Them

Unfortunately, many adult children only contact their parents when they want something from them. Instead, surprise your parents with spontaneous visits and phone calls, just to tell them that you love them or to share exciting stories from your life.

Share Your Passions and Achievements with Your Parents

As your parents are emotionally invested in your happiness, they’ll love to be kept updated about your successes and achievements as well as the parts of your life that you’re passionate about.

Ask Your Parents About Their Lives

Instead of dominating conversations, make sure to show your parents that you’re just as invested in their lives by asking them about topics that are important to them.

Give Your Parents Genuine Compliments

Don’t be afraid to shower your parents with genuine compliments. Remember that your parents are human too and most individuals appreciate being complimented.
