Having a dog as a pet can be such a wonderful and fun experience. After a long day of work, coming home to a big puppy smile and that ever-wagging tail can be all it takes to brighten your day. Dogs truly are man’s best friend, but in some cases, it can be quite the opposite. Sharing a home with an aggressive or ill-mannered dog can be comparable to a nightmare. That why these aggressive dog training tips are so helpful.

Aggressive Dog Training Tips

If you or someone you know is having issues with an aggressive dog, please take time to read the following aggressive dog training tips.

Reasons for Aggression

Dogs can be loving, great pets and some just need a little extra care and attention to get them back on the right track. Dogs will typically display certain behaviors to communicate how they are feeling. Understanding these behaviors is an important step in making sure you and your pooch have a happy and healthy relationship. Negative behaviors in your dog may include growling, snapping, mouthing, baring teeth, or even biting. If you have young children, it is extremely important not to ignore ANY signs of aggression your dog may be displaying. Some of these behaviors may be brought on by a number of different reasons. Past abuse, undiagnosed medical conditions, territorial issues, fear, confusion, or improper socialization skills; just to name a few. Diagnosing the reasons behind the aggression is the first step in rehabilitating your pup.

Physical Aids

Introducing your dog to a basket muzzle can help insure the safety of other animals and humans alike while in the training process. The basket muzzle allows your dog to do just about everything it could without it on, with the exception of biting. Safety is priority. Using baby gates around your house to separate the dog from other dogs and small children is also a helpful safety tip. If your yard allows, let the dog run freely to release any excess energy that may otherwise result in aggression or frustration.

Visit Your Veterinarian

Having your pup seen by your veterinarian is important to make sure there are no undiagnosed medical reasons as to why your dog is acting out. Also, having your dog neutered can make a huge difference in behavioral issues, but that is something you should discuss with the vet. Hearing and vision impairment can also result in aggressive behavior from an otherwise friendly pooch. Having any medical issues dealt with can help the bad behavior subside in time.

Training

Teaching yourself and your dog some basic cues can make a big difference in its overall attitude and behavior. Commands such as, “come”, “sit” and “stay” can make your dog a bit more manageable. Using treats as a reward teaches the dog not only to listen but also to be patient. Approaching your dog in a calm and relaxed manner will put him at ease and make getting his attention much easier.

It is vital to remember that the best way to help your dog is to first figure out why he is acting out. Learning aggressive dog training tips and seeking professional help is the best thing you can do for you and your dog.
