We all have that vision of the person we’d love to be. More mindful, engaged, and with purpose. But going from zero to having healthy habits takes time and dedication. Even when you feel your efforts are going nowhere, it’s important that you realize getting healthy takes planning. But above all, it takes patience. Luckily, there’s a way to create a plan that works to help you have healthy lifestyle habits and make sure you stick to them.

Building healthy habits takes time, dedication, planning, and patience. Feel proud of yourself for taking the first step towards learning new habits. Remember, it’s said that it takes an average of 21 to 66 days to form a new behavior pattern. Don’t rush into things, enjoy the journey, and see how you evolve into your more complete self.

Start with Real Goals

The first step in building healthy lifestyle habits is to set goals. Gather realistic facts about your current health, from your body weight to your exercise habits, your routine, your relationships, and more. Then, set your goals by thinking first about the big picture. Once you have this image, you can trace your path on how to get there. Don’t push yourself too much, start with small, achievable goals like drinking eight glasses of water every day. Build up your goals as you begin learning new healthy habits.

Keep Yourself Accountable

Ideally, you’ll be able to keep yourself accountable for straying off track. But, this is a habit that takes time to forge. In the meantime, enlist the help of a friend, partner, or a wellness coach to help you be accountable for your actions. Regularly track your own progress and ask yourself what helped you succeed versus what steered you off track. This is an easy way to watch out for unhealthy patterns you want to avoid.

Become More Mindful

A healthy lifestyle shouldn’t feel like work. Find the joy in building healthy habits, ones that fit your personality and empower you. Becoming more mindful is all about daily practices. Being more aware of our surroundings, the effects of our actions, the results of our efforts. Some ways to become a more mindful person include practicing meditation, yoga, reading, unplugging from technology, and spending more time outdoors. Try to incorporate these activities into your daily life to turn them into wellness habits.

Be Aware of Harmful Patterns

To change unhealthy habits, you must be aware of them first. Unhealthy habits like smoking and excessive drinking are usually evident. But, others such as maintaining toxic relationships, having a reactive behavior, or not caring for your mental health, are also unhealthy habits we don’t necessarily notice. Keep your mind focused on the real goals you set from the beginning. Whenever you see yourself moving away from that journey, turn your vision to your long-term goals and take a moment to reconsider what’s making you derail so you can get back to your wellness journey.

Re-adjust Your Goals and Efforts

Throughout your journey to building healthy habits, you’ll encounter many ups and downs. It doesn’t mean you should give up, it just means you have to re-adjust your journey. Keep in mind your priorities and the main healthy habits you wish to adapt. Focus solely on one of these at a time, to make sure you can master one before moving on to the next one. Then, make constant changes as you see some progress. Eventually, you’ll reach all the goals you set up in the first place.
