The year is 2020, and we are lucky enough to live in a time where we have options when it comes to choosing our method of contraception. The birth control method we choose should be well aligned according to our individual needs and lifestyle.

When Choosing Birth Control

The variety of birth control methods available have different things to offer and are not created equal in terms of cost, defense against pregnancy and STDs, or overall maintenance. Whether you’re trying to hack your period cycle, or trying to limit your estrogen, there is a birth control method for you.

Be mindful that you may wish to switch your birth control as you enter different stages of your life. If you experience changes in your hormone levels, as well as what you may need out of birth control.

Never Settle for the Wrong Birth Control

If you’ve tried a birth control method that doesn’t agree with your body or lifestyle, never omit it for the sake of not wanting to try others. Be mindful that within each classification, there are different brands, quality, dosages, and overall benefits.

If something doesn’t work for you in terms of the way it makes you feel, consult with your physician about switching.

Educate Yourself about Side Effects

Some methods, such as a pill, may include adverse effects upon introducing them to your body. Know which effects are normal versus which could signify another problem. Make a note of how you feel before adding a new method as a baseline to compare once you’ve incorporated it.

Along with not settling for a birth control method that doesn’t work for you, avoid settling for a physician that does not suit you. Having a physician who genuinely understands your needs and what you communicate is critical in making a choice that you feel confident and safe with.
