Is CBD the Next Ibuprofen?

Since CBD has made its way to household name status, it has extended its branches across industries. CBD can be found inside of mascara, candles, toothpaste, and even socks. Common questions about CBD are transitioning from “What’s the difference between CBD and THC?” to the future of what CBD can do and what it might replace in life as we know it.

Within this range is the possibility of CBD taking the place of or working as a suitable alternative to drugs like Ibuprofen.

What Does Ibuprofen Physically Do?

First, let’s take note of the specific functions of Ibuprofen and what it has to offer overall. It’s common knowledge that it’s used to address issues with pain, and prescribed as both over the counter and prescription.

Ibuprofen is classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used to reduce inflammation in the body, fever, and pain. Ibuprofen has been around since 1961, and long studied. It is safe to take following dosage recommendations. However, there are some potential side effects.

What Are the Potential Downsides to Ibuprofen?

The risks of overusing Ibuprofen can range from mild to severe. However, most cases of adverse effects are due to overuse. Exceeding dosage per intake and combining with other medications can pose a threat to health as well. NSAIDs as a whole have been examined and determined to pose risks to the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, central nervous system, and other functions in the body.

Ibuprofen, when overused, may cause the following adverse symptoms, but is not limited to:

  • Ringing in ears.
  • Dizziness.
  • Headache.
  • A decrease in appetite.
  • Digestive issues.
  • Swelling.
  • Weight gain.

Overall, the overuse of Ibuprofen has lead to approximately 41,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths among adults each year. While this information is relative considering the amount of good Ibuprofen does, it’s essential to consider for comparison sake.

How Can CBD Work Similarly?

When ingested, CBD can work with the endocannabinoid system in the body, which is responsible for how we manage pain and inflammation. The result is a reduction in pain and inflammation in the body. A study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine demonstrated that CBD has the potential to reduce chronic inflammation.

The entourage effect produced by CBD in the body is said to be behind its benefit, as it works as a way for the body to receiving full nontoxic medicinal benefits of the plant.

CBD is also available in countless forms so users can choose their preferred method of administration. Those looking for a fast-acting CBD treatment might choose tinctures, versus those looking for slower, long-lasting effects which often pick lotions and balms.

Potential Downsides of CBD

As of now, the FDA has only approved one CBD drug for epilepsy. Possible side effects of using CBD include dry mouth, low blood pressure, lightheadedness, and drowsiness.

Other CBD complications are related to the reality that many products on the market have not been tested or regulated. CBD lacks the body of research to conclude that it is free of long-term risks, and it has not been cleared as “safe” by the FDA.

Current Initiatives

While the main subject in question is whether or not CBD can work as a substitute for Ibuprofen, initiatives are being taken to bring CBD to a physically compatible level.

For example, a company in South Florida called Green Point has partnered with Florida State University to conduct an independent study comparing a CBD soft gel product to Ibuprofen.

Research regarding CBD, its benefits, potential risks, and direct comparison to Ibuprofen are limited—but there is evidence to support it could be a possible alternative.
