In my opinion, skincare doesn’t stop at the products you apply to your skin. Making sure you’re eating for your skin and practicing good skincare habits are also part of the equation in achieving a glowing complexion. Another element? Facial massages. A frequent facial massage is an easy and effective way to promote circulation, stimulate collagen production, and kickstart your elastin production. All of these things add to a smooth, glowing, and subtle complexion.

While facial massages are nothing new, the beauty industry and every beauty blogger out there is now preaching the benefits related to this ancient practice. Keep reading for the facial massage tools you should try this year.

1 of

1. Kansa Wand

The kansa wand is the ayurvedic cousin of the gua sha stone. Used for both the face and body, this dome-shaped wand is made of sacred bronze, which is considered a healing metal in India. The kansa wand promotes circulation, it’s said to balance the skin’s pH levels, and encourage lymphatic drainage. All of these things are needed for a glowing complexion that can fight the signs of aging.

However, there’s little scientific evidence to prove that a kansa wand can indeed accomplish these things. In my opinion, the kansa wand tip does heat up as you’re using it, giving you a warm and relaxing face massage that can at least erase the stress of a long day at work.

2. Gua Sha

The gua sha stone is an ancient Chinese healing technique that does much more than help with fine lines. The method involves moving the gua sha stone across your face using long strokes to stimulate circulation and increase blood flow to the area. The idea is to get rid of stagnant energy, or your chi, which is believed to be the source of inflammation.

While gua sha hasn’t been proven to treat wrinkles and acne as many beauty bloggers preach, it has some health benefits linked to it. Studies have linked the use of gua sha stone with relieving symptoms of hepatitis B, helping with neck pain, and relieving migraines.

3. Quartz Roller

Stemming off the popularity of the gua sha stones, beauty manufacturers everywhere decided to turn them into facial rollers using natural quartz such as jade and rose quartz. Some facial rollers even use gold as their mineral. However, jade rollers are nothing new either, they’ve been around since the 17th century – we’re just catching up.

The idea is to roll these quartzes across the skin to drain excess fluid – aka lymphatic drainage – and get rid of toxins. Again, there’s little evidence to back up the claims that it can indeed get rid of acne, wrinkles, or dark spots as many beauty bloggers claim. They do, however, give you a relaxing facial massage that can help you control your stress levels.

4. Ice Roller

A facial ice roller is just what you expect them to be. These facial rollers have water or gel-like substance that you freeze before using. Using the ice roller across your skin should promote circulation, stimulate collagen and elastin production, and bring blood flow to the area where you stroke the roller. All of these events can help reduce inflammation, which is often translates to wrinkles and pimples.

However, a facial roller has the same benefits stroking an ice cube across your face would have. So, pick your tools wisely.

5. Microcurrent Roller

Perhaps the only massage facial tool with science to back its claims. By using micro currents, these facial rollers have been proven to reduce wrinkles. The micro currency makes your face muscles tighten for a second and release, this workout makes your body boost collagen production and tighten your skin’s appearance.

One of the most significant benefits of using a microcurrent roller is that they have very minimal side effects and can offer results without any downtime.
