Mental Illness Is Making Men Lose Testosterone: What You Can Do

When we talk about men’s health, it almost seems impossible to do so without mentioning testosterone. After all, testosterone is the primary sex hormone in men. Not to mention, it is responsible for virtually every change that occurs to them during adolescence, and it’s the key to maintaining those changes throughout their life.

Low Testosterone Is Trending

Although dropping levels of testosterone are portrayed to be an everyday thing among aging men, according to science, it shouldn’t be that way. Based on the study, lower levels of testosterone in men are not necessarily linked to age, but rather to their mental health.

Over the past years, prescriptions for testosterone therapy rose over 50 percent. This is not because more men are reaching a certain age. The culprit behind the rise appears to be due to increasing levels of stress and excess weight.

It turns out. Testosterone is hugely related to men’s mental health. The study found that men with declines in testosterone were those likely to be obese, stopped smoking, or were depressed. This isn’t surprising since various studies have linked low testosterone with higher anxiety levels and increased risk of depression.

Struggling with Low Testosterone? Try This

Symptoms of low testosterone can significantly impact men’s lifestyle. Symptoms include erectile dysfunction, weight gain, and decreased energy. Fortunately, treatment for low testosterone is widely available. Here are some things men can try to fight the symptoms.

Experiment with Intermittent Fasting

A 12 to 15 hour fast can be beneficial for men struggling with low testosterone. According to research, there’s a possibility intermittent fasting can help restore testosterone better. Besides, there are other health benefits associated with intermittent fasting and men’s health.

Incorporate Weightlifting

Consider incorporating weightlifting into your fitness routine to reap the many health benefits linked with it. Aim for at least three weightlifting sessions per week to help improve your testosterone levels.

Improve Your Sleeping Routine

It’s no joke. Sleep can fix everything. Hormones like testosterone regenerate overnight, so you should try to get at least 7-9 hours of restorative sleep. Do your best to go to bed at the same time every night, preferably around 10:30 to decrease the release of cortisol, aka the stress hormone, and improve the quality of your sleep.

Look for Natural Remedies

Many natural remedies and herbs have research that proves their effectiveness at improving testosterone levels. Consider incorporating remedies such as vitamin D, zinc, and fenugreek herbs.

When to Seek Help

If you ever notice abnormal symptoms, including weight loss, hair loss, and acne, it might be time to check your testosterone levels. If you’re struggling with depression, anxiety, or other mental disorders, talk to your doctor about your testosterone levels as they might be declining as well.
