When it comes to hair color for men, there’s tons of advice on how to make sure you choose the right one. However, they’re mostly talking about overall tone. What happened to natural-looking highlights? Highlights are never natural-looking, not even for women unless you stay away from the traditional foil-paper, salon highlights.
If you’re looking for a natural way of getting highlights, without driving to the nearest hair salon, we got you.
Set Your Normal Style
To prevent a major hair disaster, make sure you’re working on your styled hair. When you set your hair beforehand, you’ll be able to see where the highlights should fall. Also, make sure your highlights are no bigger than a shoelace. The thinner the strands, the better.
Use a Bleach Kit
Find a bleach kit or use a natural bleacher like lemon to dye your highlights. Make sure you do an allergy test before using any new products. If a bleach kit is too scary, try one of these natural hair dyes. When you use your bleach kit, make sure to follow these guidelines:
- Avoid bleaching your roots
- Blend in different colors to make the appearance more natural
- Avoid going too light or using unnatural looking colors
Find Your Brushes
Luckily, your bleaching kit should include a few brushes to apply. However, you need a spooley brush, aka the brush used to apply mascara or brow gel. Apply the bleach or hair dye with the one from the package and use the spooley brush to blend it. If you don’t have one of these brushes at hand, use a toothbrush you’re never using again.
Another option, if you’re using natural hair dyes, is to use a comb. Find a thin tooth comb that is spread apart and apply the dye using the comb instead.
Know Your Boundaries
If you want to keep your highlights looking natural, you better know when to stop. Apply the dye from the middle of your hair shaft down to the ends, nothing higher than that. Once you get closer to the roots, it can be difficult to cover any mistakes.
Be Careful
Above all, natural-looking highlights are about common sense. Use your judgment and don’t do anything that seems too complicated. If you think this is too much, seek help from a professional colorist to make sure your hair is in good hands.
