Makeup can completely transform a face. Women around the world use makeup to enhance their features and beauty. Unfortunately, some women have sensitive skin, which breaks out immediately on coming in contact with skincare and cosmetic products. These women, thus, feel compelled to stay away from makeup products. However, the advent of non comedogenic cosmetics has changed things for better for this segment of women.

What Is Non-Comedogenic Makeup?

Comedones are imperfections found in acne-prone skin and are more popularly known as clogged pores. Clogged pores comprise a hair follicle filled with bacteria, sebum oil, and skin debris, and depict the first sign of an acne problem. Human skin has two types of comedones: open and closed. Commonly known as a whitehead, a closed comedone has sebum growing underneath the skin. This sebum often leads to the rupturing of the skin and the formation of a low-grade inflammatory reaction.

An open comedone, on the other hand, is more popularly known as a blackhead. In the case of a blackhead, the sebum erupts out of the skin through a wide opening. This sebum turns black on coming in contact with the air. Acne is caused by clogged pores, which in turn, are a result of blackheads, whiteheads, dead skin, and bacteria. Noncomedogenic makeup refers to cosmetic and skincare products that do not cause clogged pores or comedones and thus, prevent acne. Non-comedogenic makeup is an ideal solution for people who have sensitive skin that easily breaks out.

What Ingredients Do Non-Comedogenic Makeup Products Use?

Non-comedogenic ingredients are substances that do not clog pores. Any ingredient or substance that claims to be ‘non-comedogenic’ in nature is first tested in a laboratory to verify all claims. All ingredients are rated on the comedogenicity scale. A zero-rating on the scale means the ingredient is non-comedogenic. A rating of five, on the other hand, denotes that the ingredient is highly comedogenic in nature.

So, Non-Comedogenic Makeup Doesn’t Cause Clogged Pores?

Women with acne-prone skin should steer clear of comedogenic products. Non-comedogenic cosmetics are always less likely to cause clogged pores in people with sensitive skin. However, an important thing to highlight here is that there is no guarantee that non-comedogenic makeup products will not lead to acne.

Different people have different skin, which reacts differently to different products. In some cases, even non-comedogenic cosmetic products can cause people’s skin to breakout. Thus, if you notice that a non-comedogenic product is causing your skin to break out, immediately stop using the product.

A Note from GR8NESS

Non comedogenic cosmetics are a boon to women with acne-prone skin. A majority of the makeup products that feature this label have been effective at blocking the eruption of clogged pores. However, contrary to what some people assume, these products do not clear acne. They only promote skin health by blocking clogged pores.
