Questions You Shouldn’t be Afraid to Ask Your Doctor

Going to the doctor isn’t really the best experience in the world but it has to be done from time to time. You need to keep in mind that doctors have strict confidentiality rules, so anything you talk about in that examination room goes no further. Asking your doctor questions about certain things is something that you should do for the good of your health. Below you can find several medical questions that you should not be afraid to ask your doctor no matter what your reason for being there is.

Are There Any Side Effects to This Medication?

When you are prescribed medication for, well, anything, you should make sure that you ask about possible side effects from that medication and how common those side effects are. The doctor will then give you an honest answer based on the facts and their experience in the medical industry. You can then figure out if it is worth you taking the medication or not.

Is There Anything Else I Can Try?

Some doctors are really prescription-happy. This means they will just give you medication without talking through any other possible remedies for what you are currently experiencing. There are so many issues, both physical and mental, that can be solved by a change in diet, giving up alcohol, and even herbal remedies.

What is My Current Health Like?

Often doctors will carry out a load of tests on you and not even tell you how you actually are physically. It is so important that you ask the doctor what kind of shape you are in. If they give their professional opinion, either your mind can be put at rest or you can take the necessary steps to improve your health based on what they tell you.

When Should I Come Back?

If you have quite common symptoms related to something such as the flu, your doctor might very well send you away and tell you it will pass in time. You should ask your doctor when you should return. There will be a time when even the most-simple symptoms are more dangerous so this is one of these medical questions your doctor should easily be able to answer.

Any Mental Health Questions

There is such a stigma around mental health and there shouldn’t be. Talk to your doctor about your mental health and ask questions. Things like “why do I feel so sad?” “What can I do to feel better?” It’s good to vent and any decent doctor should explain to you that anxiety, depression, and other kinds of mental health problems are very common. Whether you go down the route of medication, counselling, or something else, your doctor should be able to steer you in the right direction.

Asking your doctor questions is really important to do on a regular basis, and you should never just sit back and listen. As a patient, a doctor should be able to answer any questions that come their way and if anything, they should feel happy that they can put your mind at ease.
