What Is CBD?

The Difference Between CBD and THC

CBD is not to be confused with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another cannabis compound of which you may have seen or heard about before. The main difference is that THC has psychoactive effects for the user, which is commonly associated with feeling “high.”

We can trace the use of marijuana to treat pain back for thousands of years. It’s modern science that has been able to remove the specific compounds responsible for pain relief, of which CBD is one.

While general pain relief is probably the most well-known health benefit of CBD, researchers are looking at some other exciting potential health and wellness benefits, most notably:

  • Reducing acne
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Helping to control seizures
  • Decreasing the symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Improving the quality of sleep

CBD is still a new product in terms of its medicinal applications. There are countless scientific studies taking place at the time to understand its capabilities. The future looks very positive regarding the number of health benefits and data-backed studies to support them.

Doctors prescribed the first FDA approved drug containing CBD to help patients suffering from two forms of epilepsy; Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, and Dravet Syndrome. These are two complex conditions that do not always respond well to traditional medicines.

Patients suffering from chronic conditions like arthritis and Parkinson’s disease use it with some success as well. Studies suggest CBD can be helpful at reducing inflammation caused by arthritis, as well as controlling the shaking caused by Parkinson’s disease. Although, further research is still needed to see the extent of these potential benefits. CBD has proven to reduce the chronic pain many people with these conditions experience.

Are There Any Adverse CBD Oil Side Effects?

CBD is generally safe, according to many doctors and scientists who advocate it. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) started approving prescription medications containing CBD in June of 2018.

As with all medicines, however, there are some potential side effects of which to be aware. The main negative cbd oil side effects include:

  • Changes in appetite
  • Changes in mood
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

There is also a risk of CBD products reacting with any other medications you may be taking. Always seek advice from a medical professional before using CBD if you’re taking any medications. Research is still ongoing to discover the science and benefits behind CBD.
