The core of our self-care practice is personal development. These are the actions we take to improve self-awareness, develop our skills, and quality of life. Personal growth changes as we walk through life, and it goes beyond self-help. Focusing on self-improvement means we’re prioritizing our growth as individuals to usher in our satisfaction and happiness.
At GR8NESS, we don’t believe in pressing development goals on anyone. We understand growth happens differently for everyone, and we all go about growth a tad differently. Count on us as a resource to pick and choose what serves you when you need it.
Personal development is a lifelong process. It’s the fuel we use to work on our talents and potential, build human capital, and be proactive about reaching our dreams and aspirations. Most people believe personal growth can only apply to the workplace. When in reality, working on ourselves extends to every aspect of our lives.
Self-improvement means not only working on our skills and talents but also working on becoming the best versions of ourselves we can be. From focusing on eliminating toxic behaviors, leaving bad habits behind, recognizing our mistakes, and forgiving ourselves—any act we do in the name of improvement counts.
The key to making progress on our self-development journey is goals. Setting goals starts by identifying your needs. Ask yourself: What do you want to change? How can you affect your change? Can you list short-term goals? What’s the long-term picture? Are these goals realistic? Do you need help to achieve these goals? Do you have everything you need to accomplish these goals?
Answering these questions before you start will help you draw somewhat of a plan. Then, ask yourself one more question: What’s your motivation to achieve these goals? The answer to that question will become your fuel and make you self-accountable.
But, if we’re talking about personal development, we must point out one thing–goals are ever-changing. Our motivations and dreams today might shift tomorrow. That is okay. We’re evolving beings that keep adapting to new realities as we discover our new self. Don’t be afraid to change the course, as long as you recognize you’re still walking down a path of wellbeing and self-love.
Yes, self-development is a personal journey, but you don’t have to go through it alone. When it comes to personal development in areas like mental health, physical health, parenting, and more, having a support group by your side is vital. When you seek support from like-minded people around you, their encouragement, knowledge, and companionship make the personal development process that much more enjoyable.
Not every aspect of your self-growth journey will need a support group. But, being honest with yourself and recognizing when you need help to keep walking is not only self-growth but self-care.
