Our social feeds are filled with a detox plan for everything, even our pets! But, why on earth would someone need to detox their sex life?
It turns out, the sex-detox people might be onto something here. Sadly, with all the joy that comes from having a healthy sex life, comes a lot of risks. Endocrine disruptors are everywhere, from lube to sex toys, and condoms. Suddenly, sex doesn’t seem quite as well, sexy.
Un-Sexy Chemicals in Your Sex Life
While in a healthy relationship you don’t have to deal with a toxic person, you might have to worry about the toxicity in the sex products you’re using to elevate your experience.
Most sex toys are fabricated with scary ingredients that you definitely don’t want close to your private areas.
Phthalates are commonly found in sex toys, and they’ve have been linked to ADHD, asthma, breast cancer, and reproductive health issues. Other favorite materials include jelly, rubber, and PVC, all cheap materials that contain phthalates that can also cause skin irritation.
But, sex toys are not the only ones betraying us. Your favorite lube might also have harmful ingredients that can attract microbes and potentially mess with your hormones. Keep an eye open for ingredients like glycerin, nonoxynol-9, petroleum, parabens, and chlorhexidine gluconate.
Sexy Nontoxic Alternatives
Don’t let these toxic chemicals scare you. Skipping protection, saying goodbye to your favorite vibrator, and not trying newly flavored lubes is not the solution. In fact, it’s the exact opposite of what we want to achieve here.
The idea is to start reading those ingredient labels people. While these ingredients are not sexy and definitely not bed-talk worthy, it’s important to know what we’re using.
Healthy sex life essentials should be paraben-, phthalates-, and artificial fragrance-free. Make sure to choose products made from plants like aloe and non-toxic botanicals, keep an eye for BPA-free plastic sex toys, and all nourishing oils.
While these nontoxic alternatives won’t instantly improve your sex life, they will turn your sexual encounters into a luxurious, downright life-affirming experience.
Would You?
Since we’re all joining the latest detox challenge, and we’re all looking to stay away from harmful chemicals, the question remains: should you detox your sex life?
