When it comes to self-care, one of the most important questions to ask yourself is: Do you know what self-care works for you? If you’ve always been a little skeptical about the importance of self-care, this is a question worth thinking about. Spa days, yoga classes, candle-lit bubble baths, or a weekend getaway sound great in theory, but in reality, making time and space for yourself often becomes an afterthought at the end of a long and hectic day.

When you realize that self-care is not an all or nothing activity, you can open up to unconventional ways to practice self-care. To give you an idea, here are small things you can do daily that will nurture your inner self and create room for more in your life.

1) Give Yourself Some Quiet Time

Meditation, not your thing? Don't worry, you can still give yourself a little quiet time. Find a place and time to sit and just be quiet with yourself. Some people like the mornings before everyone is awake and demanding their time. Some like the end of the day so they can reflect. Or even during your lunch hour. Or take a drive and hang out in silence with a friend or partner. Choose whatever time and place work for you.

2) Meal Prep for the Week

Yeah, that sounds like work, right? Well, it may be at first. But give it a shot and give it some time, maybe about a month, before you decide it's not for you. Try some fast and healthy meal prep ideas to get you into the swing of it. It may turn out to be extra work you don't want to do, or it may turn out to be a time saver that gives that little bit of breathing space you need every morning.

3) Give Yourself a Manicure

Don't panic, I'm not suggesting you give up mani-pedis, I love them too. But sometimes I just can't get to the salon. Keep a nail care kit ready for those times when you wish to change your nail polish. Or you just want to trim and buff your nails so they look neat.

4) Plan Your Week

Looking a week ahead is another not-so-fun activity that can actually be self care. When you know what your week is going to look like, you know how much time you have for self care. You can more easily visit the salon, make sure you get to the gym, or even just grab those few minutes of quiet when you know what's coming your way.

5) Stay Socially Connected

And I don't mean on social media. In fact, you may want to disconnect from social media every once in a while. We're all so busy, sometimes we don't get to spend much time with people we care about or even live with. So, put it on the schedule. You've heard of couples scheduling a date night? That's why. When it's on the schedule, it's more likely to happen. So, schedule a date for coffee, lunch, or dinner with someone who understands, knows, and accepts you as you are.
