We all love to think we follow a healthy diet. If I look at my diet, I’d say it’s a pretty healthy diet, yet I do avoid certain vital foods like meat. Does it mean my diet is unhealthy? A balanced diet is expected to include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and lean proteins. What’s your idea of a healthy diet?

Recommended Healthy Eating Plan

Truthfully a balanced diet is one that includes everything your body needs to function correctly. However, it’s recommended that we all follow the Healthy Eating Plate guide, also known as the Food Pyramid.

  • Make vegetables, fruits, and whole grains your top priority.
  • Include some lean meats, poultry, bean, eggs, and nuts. But, limit red meats.
  • Avoid or limit trans fats, added sugars, and sodium.
  • Be mindful of your portions.

The Calories Dilemma

Somehow calories got a bad reputation. However, without calories, we couldn’t do essential functions like walking, let alone breathe. The recommended calorie intake per day varies per age, gender, and weight management goals. The average adult should eat about 2,000 calories to maintain their weight. If you’re looking to lose weight, that number drops to around 1,500 calories per day.

However, what’s most important than the number is the nutritional value behind these calories. You should limit your consumption of empty calories, such as:

  • Bacon
  • Cakes
  • Cheese
  • Cookies
  • Energy drinks
  • Ice cream
  • Pizza

How to Have a Healthy Diet

If you’re worried about your diet being unhealthy, take this quiz to find out. Then, try to keep your diet within these guidelines:

  • Eat at least five portions of fruits and veggies per day.
  • Add some dairy or dairy alternatives.
  • Choose unsaturated oils and eat them in small amounts.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.

For those following a restrictive diet like a vegan diet or the keto diet, consider speaking with a nutritionist to ensure your body is receiving the necessary nutrients to be at its best. Remember, your body is a delicate machine that needs high-quality fuel to thrive.
