What is self care? The official definition of self care is “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress, or taking action to preserve and improve one’s health,” according to the Oxford Dictionary.

The definition leaves much open to interpretation. It’s highly subjective. Here at GR8NESS, we want to know what self care means to you.

Self Care Comes in Different Forms

No two people practice self care the same way. Self care is deeply personal and unique to each person’s needs and preferences. Some people prefer to spend a night out with friends, and others prefer to spend a quiet night in by themselves.

When it comes to self care, some people focus more on the physical, dedicating their time to the gym and a healthy diet. Others consider self care to be more of a mental process, participating in meditation or practicing positive self-talk and utilizing affirmations to power through their day.

There is No Wrong Way to Practice Self Care

What it comes down to is that there is no wrong way to practice self care. Your version of self care will differ from your best friend’s, your partner’s, and your colleague’s versions. The way you practice self care will also change over time, as you find yourself at different stages of your life or facing different circumstances.

Parents may find themselves in need of a different kind of self care than those without children. A teenager will need a different kind of self care than a person in middle age. This is entirely natural, and you should embrace whatever type of self care you need at any given time.
