Your body language can say more about you than the words you speak. It provides nonverbal clues to those around you about your attitude and emotions. Even without you realizing it, your body language is a window to your thoughts.

You may think your body language is insignificant, but it says quite a bit about you.

Finger or Foot Tapping

Tapping your fingers or feet while talking to someone can give the impression that you're impatient, waiting for the conversation to be over. It can also signify boredom, apathy, or nervousness.

For some, finger or foot tapping is a subconscious habit that can be hard to break. Instead, try keeping your hands folded in your lap, or your feet crossed at the ankles.

Micro-Facial Expressions

Micro-facial expressions can appear as mere flashes across your face.

Raised eyebrows and wide eyes signal surprise. A wrinkled nose, raised upper lip, and exposed teeth signal disgust. Dilated nostrils and a jutted out lower jaw signal anger. Having just one side of your mouth raised signals contempt, hated, or skepticism. Tiny features on your face speak GR8 volumes.

Leaning In

Leaning in towards the person you're speaking with signifies interest.

If you're in a job interview, leaning in slightly and nodding your head shows that you're engaged and interested in what the other person is saying. In a meeting, it shows engagement and signifies that you're paying attention. When speaking to a loved one, leaning in shows them that you care about what they're saying and that you're focused on the conversation.

Hand Gestures

We often use hand gestures when we speak without even realizing it. Hand gestures such as pointing, raising your hands in the air, or waving them as you speak each signifies something different. Pointing may be considered aggressive while throwing your hands up in the air can signal either exacerbation, anger, or excitement.

Many people move their hands when they speak when they become excited or to emphasize specific points. It's all about context.

Body Stance

When your stance is "closed," you appear less approachable and friendly. Examples include having your arms crossed tightly in front of you or tucked behind your back. When your stance is "open," you portray yourself as being inviting, receptive, and friendly. Examples include facing someone directly with your hands apart, and your shoulders relaxed.
