Nowadays, there seems to be a detox for everything, although we’re still waiting for science to prove these are all good for our health. One thing is certain, though, detoxing your closet is a must-do. If you’ve ever tried a closet purge before, you know exactly what I’m talking about. A closet detox, a wardrobe cleanse, whatever you want to call it, makes us feel good. Period.
A closet detox is harder than people think. Most of us don’t have the heart to part ways with items that have sentimental value or cost a lot of money, or they’re part of our “someday” outfit collection. However, if you manage to forget about all those things, I promise the reward is so amazing, you might want to start detoxing all your friend’s closets.
Reasons for a Closet Detox
Everyone has their reasons to do a closet detox. It truly is a personal experience. I’ve done closet purges after breakups, twice when I moved to a different country, and occasionally, as my style has shifted from trendy to classic and back to trendy again. Closet detoxes are part of the cycle of life, in my opinion.
If you need more convincing, here are some GR8 reasons for a closet detox:
- It makes you appreciate your clothes more.
- It creates an opportunity to give back.
- It helps you save money and time.
- It will push you to find your true style.
- It forces you to be creative with what you have.
Should I Detox My Closet?
Probably, yes. If a quick look at your closet makes you feel stressed, anxious, or sad, you need a detox. To test if my closet needs a detox, at least every three months, I stare at my closet for a few minutes. Then, I pull at least 5 to 10 pieces of clothes, and ask myself:
- Do I need this?
- When was the last time I wore this?
- Does this fit me?
If my answers are no, I can’t remember, and not again, that means it’s time for a detox.
How Do I Start?
If all of this sounds convincing, and as you read this, you kept nodding along, most likely, you feel your closet needs a detox, too. Enlist the help of a friend, turn on the music, and maybe grab a glass of wine to help ease the pain of parting ways with that leather jacket you never wore. Once you’re ready, submit your closet to this quiz to find out what you should keep, donate, or sell.
