You probably already had a sound in mind before you even clicked through the headline, am I right? That’s because it’s scientifically proven that certain sounds can improve our mood, ease anxiety, and help us sleep.

Maybe for you, it’s the sound of rain on the roof or windchimes. It could be a song you’ve loved for years or the deep sounds of crystal bowl meditation. It could even be the sound of a busy city street for some people. No matter the noise, there’s a science behind it.

The Science of Sound

Studies show that music and sound are capable of changing the frequency of our brainwaves. Sounds that play at a faster beat per minute create alpha brainwaves, which are associated with feeling alert, conscious, and upbeat. Sounds with a slower beat per minute produce delta brainwaves, leading to feelings of calmness, relaxation, and sleepiness.

Essentially, you can alter your mindset using different sounds or music, and it’s not just a placebo effect. Try it out sometime, and see the effects for yourself.
